This is a major new residential development in the heart of Dornoch Square. The project had its challenges; sitting in the middle of a conservation area, there was strong public concern about any new development in the square. Additionally, the site was occupied by a former petrol station complete with contaminated land and underground fuel tanks that needed to be decommissioned before building could move forward. Ultimately we took 2 years for our public consultation process in order to ensure that all voices in the community, for and against, were fully heard.
To create a meaningful link with the history of the area we based the new build designs on The Sutherland Arms, a hotel that had occupied the same site in the 1950s. The finished creation was a modern development of townhouses and apartments that have proven to be very popular with the local population, and public and civic reaction has been universally positive.
